How to Make Your Website Agent-Friendly

Agents browse differently than humans. Here's what to add, fix, and expose so AI can find you, understand you, and complete actions instead of guessing.

Most websites are built for humans clicking links. Agents work differently. They crawl, parse, and synthesize. If your site is opaque to them, they either skip you or hallucinate something plausible. Neither outcome helps.

This post covers six changes that make a site agent-friendly. You don't need all of them on day one. Start with the first two; the rest depends on what actions you want agents to complete.

1. Add an agent entry point (llms.txt)

Agents need a map. Put llms.txt at your root: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

Include:

  • Start-here URLs: home, product, pricing, docs
  • Machine-friendly links: API docs, OpenAPI spec, feeds
  • Policies: refund/returns, privacy, terms
  • Support and contact, plus SLA if you have one

Keep it short and navigational. Some sites use llms-full.txt for a larger export; that's optional. The main file should point agents to the right places without dumping everything.

2. Make content machine-readable (Schema.org)

Agents guess less when the page tells them what it is. Schema.org structured data (JSON-LD) does that.

Priority order:

  • Organization, WebSite, WebPage — who you are, what the site is
  • Product + Offer — price, currency, availability
  • FAQPage — canonical answers agents can cite
  • HowTo — if you have setup flows or step-by-step guides

This is the same foundation as modern SEO. It matters more when answers are synthesized instead of clicked. A product page with clear Offer markup beats a page where the agent has to infer price from prose.

3. Expose a callable interface (OpenAPI or MCP)

If you want agents to do things — book, quote, check eligibility, place an order — give them an API, not just pages to scrape.

OpenAPI is the default. Publish a spec. Keep endpoints stable. Return descriptive errors so agents can self-correct when something fails.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is for agent-native clients. If your users run tools that support MCP, a remote MCP server lets agents call your tools directly. OpenAI's connector guidance applies here too if you want your site to be "toolable."

Scraping is brittle. APIs are contracts.

4. Make the site browsable by headless agents

Many agents browse like a user: headless or assisted browser. Common failure modes:

  • Heavy JS rendering — content appears only after React/Vue hydrates
  • Delayed content behind client-side routing
  • Modal popups, cookie walls, infinite scroll
  • Fragile selectors and non-semantic buttons

Fix it by:

  • Server-rendering key content (pricing, plan details, product attributes)
  • Putting critical data in the initial HTML, not after a fetch
  • Using semantic HTML: button, form, labels, aria-*
  • Keeping cookie banners lightweight; avoid blocking interstitials

This matches what "agentic commerce" guidance recommends. If a human can't get the answer without clicking through three modals, an agent probably can't either.

5. Create agent conversion assets

Think of these as landing resources for agents, not humans:

  • Comparison pages — "X vs Y", "Best for {use-case}"
  • Decision aids — ROI calculator, TCO, migration checklist
  • Procurement pack — security, compliance, DPA, SOC2/ISO links in one place
  • Plain-language pricing — avoid "contact sales" dead-ends when you can
  • FAQ with canonical answers — match what agents extract; make it citable

Agents prefer sources with clear, unambiguous facts. A page that says "Pricing starts at $X/month for Y users" beats a page that says "Get a custom quote."

6. Don't block legitimate agents by accident

Rate limit. Don't blanket-block automation.

  • Provide a documented way for tools and agents to identify themselves (e.g. User-Agent, header, or registration)
  • Monitor abuse separately from "good" agent traffic
  • Be more permissive vs more restrictive is a real tradeoff; agentic commerce guidance leans permissive when the upside is discovery and conversion

Minimal checklist

If you want a quick start:

  1. Add /llms.txt with canonical pages and policies
  2. Add Schema.org JSON-LD for products/offers, org, and FAQ
  3. Ensure SSR or non-JS access for key pages
  4. Publish OpenAPI (and/or MCP) for key actions
  5. Ship an agent landing page: pricing, features, integrations, security, FAQs
